The Cape

Aktualisiert: 16. Aug.

From Paternoster, we moved towards Cape Town.

We stayed with Chene, Manie’s daughter, who lives there and kindly hosted us until August 9th. In reality, we invaded her house, and she slept on the couch! Thank you, Chene!

The Cape Town area is stunning and offers mountains, hills, and the sea. Table Mountain is spectacular, and we had a fantastic sunny day to see it in all its glory. Unfortunately, there are maintenance works on the Cable Car that goes to the top, so we didn’t go up. Since it’s the low season here, they take advantage of it for maintenance. During the day, the temperature is mild, around 25 degrees, and in the evening, it drops to 7. If the sun is out, it’s pleasant, but if the wind picks up and it gets cloudy, you can feel the winter. But it’s not just the mountains that are special; what fascinates me the most is the sea! Here are the Capes that sailors fear and respect, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost Cape of the Western Coast (the southernmost point of South Africa is Cape Agulhas, located on the eastern coast). As a sailing enthusiast, the Cape of Good Hope has always fascinated me. You hear many stories about sailors in these roaring seas, and it’s one of the Capes to pass if you’re sailing around the world, a Cape with a lot of character!

The spectacle is breathtaking, the wind, the noise, the smell of the sea imprint on you, and you know that here you don’t mess around. The day was calm for these areas, yet seeing the sea currents, rocks, and waves makes you realize that if you sail these seas, it’s best to stay away. Manie has often sailed these areas, and the waves are enormous, so you sail far from the coast. Additionally, there are many rocks just below the water’s surface, a nightmare for any sailor.

The city of Cape Town is by the sea, and the most popular sport is surfing. Here, they have a different relationship with sharks than we do. It’s not that they don’t worry, but there are nets that protect the beaches, and that’s it. The thought that a shark might decide to pass through an area where there is no beach doesn’t seem to be relevant. They live with it, and if you look at the statistics, shark attacks worldwide are not that many annually. Well, I guess you have to be born here to understand.

Well, that said, take a look at the photos. There are so many things to tell, but I’ll do it later calmly.
